Kiwi has always been one of those fruits that I avoided simply because of the way it looked. I assumed I wouldn’t enjoy the texture, and for years I never gave it a chance. I’ve had strawberry-kiwi flavored drinks before, but that was about as close to eating an actual kiwi as I was willing to get.
So why did I finally try kiwi? I came across an Instagram post that claimed eating two kiwis about an hour before bed could help improve sleep quality. As someone who has struggled with sleep on and off, I figured it was worth a try. To my surprise, I actually liked it. The texture wasn’t nearly as strange as I expected, and the flavor was sweet, slightly tart, and refreshing. It made me wonder why I had spent so many years avoiding it based on appearance alone.
As I googled, I learned that kiwis naturally contain serotonin, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in regulating sleep. They are also rich in antioxidants and contain vitamins C and E, which may help reduce oxidative stress and support overall health. Some studies have found that people who ate kiwi before bedtime fell asleep faster, slept longer, and reported better sleep quality.
Beyond sleep, kiwi is packed with fiber, which supports digestion and gut health. It also contains potassium, folate, and other nutrients that contribute to heart health and immune function. For such a small fruit, it delivers quite a nutritional punch.
Will kiwi become a nightly ritual for me? Time will tell. But it has reminded me that sometimes the things we avoid because of assumptions end up becoming pleasant surprises. In this case, all it took was a social media post and a little curiosity to convince me to try something new.
